As any student will tell you, text books are a major expense. As college tuition continues to increase the average student can expect to spend into the four figure range just for textbooks and other related course materials. These types of expenditures are definitely a contributing factor to the tried and true clich of the “starving student”. Many students, while understanding implicitly the importance of a given textbook in relation to understanding the course material, simply forgo buying some books as a cost cutting measure.

First of all, forget what is in the movies. Don’t use the antics of characters in Animal House, Revenge of the Nerds or Old School to form an impression of what a college fraternity or sorority is really about. Fraternities are a social organization for undergraduate students, usually confined to the male gender. A sorority is the same, but for females. Members of both societies form close friendships, defined through support and amity. In many cases these relationships become lifelong. The shared brotherhood of a fraternity, or sisterhood of a sorority, promotes loyalty and fellowship that can often emerge in professional relationships after graduation.
