The concept behind High Performance Liquid Chromatography is deceptively simple: A liquid, typically a solvent such as a halide, has polarity which increases the separation thru the columns stationary phase, so separating a material like an unknown protein into its amino acids for precise inspection. The fluid can be anything including saturated hydro-carbons to ethers and alcohols, so long as the solution causes the substances being separated to follow its true order while flowing through the mobile phase.
