At present, the Polish urban centre of Gdansk is a fantastic tourist destination. Along with it is neighbouring communities of Sopot and Gdynia, people travel there to delight in the seashores, nightlife and culture. It’s location on the Baltic has meant that Gdansk being among the most key ports in Northern Europe.

The summer months of 1940 saw World War II reach the skies of England as the RAF fearlessly stand up to the onslaught of Hitler’s Luftwaffe. Immediately following a period identified as the ‘Phoney War’, Hitler had directed his forces to invade several other European countries and they met limited opposition in Belgium, Netherlands or France.

In the build up to the Allied invasion in Northern France in 1944, a outstanding deal of preparation and organizing was required. Data was frequently being harvested by a community of agents whilst materials and machines were being brought to England. These would be necessary all through and just after what was and still is the largest invasion force ever assembled.

The struggle that occurred involving our planet’s 2 super powers, the Soviet Union and the USA was considered the longest non-conflict engagement conflict in the history of the world. It had become called the Cold War. The 2 sides both had respective allies; with the NATO lead USA controlling Western Europe and the Warsaw Pact driven by the Soviet Union controlling the Eastern side of Europe.

Just like the region close to Ypres, there are numerous cemeteries, mostly along small, muddy roads. My first planned destination was the Hawthorn Crater. This is one of the mines which was detonated underneath the German front line at the outset of the Battle of the Somme in 1916. The explosion was recorded on film and is often shown in documentaries about the Battle of the Somme. After driving around for a short time, I came across the Newfoundland Park Memorial & Visitors Centre and stopped there.
