Acoustic guitars are a musical instrument of the lute family, having a smooth, waisted shape with a round sound hole and a fretted neck down which run six guitar strings. The strings are secured on the top of the neck to tuning screws, and from the other end to a bridge fixed to the instrument’s sound board, or belly. The top three strings are generally manufactured of gut or nylon material; the others are metal. The strings are tuned E A d g b e1 (E = second E beneath center C; e1 = E over middle C). The player’s left-hand fingertips halt the guitar strings at the correct frets in order to deliver the correct pitches; the right-hand fingers pluck the guitar strings. Certain metal-strung guitars will be plucked with a tiny flat plectrum, or pick.
